July Update

PROOF THAT EVERYBODY FEELS COMFORTABLE WITH JACK

SA501045While most dogs have a penchant for going after chickens, Jack is a protector of all.  He’s a Great Pyrenees mix, a breed originating from the mountains of France by the same name and bred to protect livestock.  Jack takes his job seriously, even when he’s napping!

HAPPY HENS

We’re happy to report the eight white Leghorn hens we took in earlier this year have gained weight and strut around showing off their now healthy-looking feathers.   They were rescued from an egg farm in central California where the owners abandoned all 50,000 hens.  Members of Farm Sanctuary were able to enter the property and remove the approximately 6000 survivors, extremely weak after two weeks without food or water.  Knowing they had spent their entire lives in tiny cages, it was an emotional experience bringing them to the farm and watching them scratch in the dirt for the first time.  Gradually getting stronger and bolder, they now roam the farm with the rest of the flock.

SUMMER IN FULL SWING

The warm summer weather has caused an explosion in the hay field.  The second cutting not far off, the barn will be bulging at the seams with high quality grass hay.  The chickens now have a fan in their coop, the dogs take frequent dips in the ponds, and the humans get a reprieve in a house that stays cool.  The horses don’t seem to care….when given the option of shade, their preference seems to be wherever the best food is.

IF YOU’RE TRAVELING WITH HORSES….

….and staying at Shady Grove, you have the option of keeping them in the arena or in a ¼ acre pasture enclosed with Electrobraid.   Grass hay is included in the $25/night/horse fee.  The farm is an easy five minute drive from Interstate 5.

4TH OF JULY IN ASHLAND

Ashland hosts one of the best 4th of July celebrations anywhere.  An amazing parade, great music, food, and artisan booths draw thousands to the area.  In fact, it’s so popular people book rooms many months in advance. With the Shakespeare festival in full swing, it can be challenging to find a room any time of the summer.  Enjoy the best of both worlds by staying at Shady Grove – the hub bub of Ashland and the tranquility of the country – separated by only a 10 minute drive or a 20 minute bike ride.

Hope to see you soon!
